Intimate Guitar
Dayton Public Radio's Longest Running Program
Jim
McCutcheon, the host of Intimate
Guitar, has been involved with stringed instruments since
the age of 11. Jim has devoted his life to promoting classical
guitar, an interesting choice for a University of Dayton
student who received a degree in physics, and was contemplating
a career in medicine. Instead, Jim tried out performing
in a band called Quintessence. This experience led him
to choose music rather than medicine.
He now boasts 37 years
of performing, teaching and promoting classical guitar, which
benefits Dayton Pubic Radio listeners who enjoy his weekly Friday
night show.
Jim is in touch with
players of stringed instruments from around the world, which he has
met through his performing, teaching, and as president of the Dayton
classical Guitar Society.
Jim credits the Internet with facilitating
his international relationships with outstanding guitarists.
He receives CDs and other recordings from top stringed instrument performers
from around the world, and reviews all the new guitar music he can. He
also uses CDs from other guitarists in the Dayton area, as well as from
Dayton Public Radio's own collection.
The exceptional selections,
those that are the most "interesting, complex, artful pieces, that reflect
the artistic use of the instrument", make it to Intimate Guitar.
While music in the
classical tradition is featured most often, some pieces are in
jazz, blues, ragtime, or new age styles. Occasionally, the pieces
Jim selects are not played on guitar at all, but on other stringed instruments,
such as the mandolin, lute and even the harp.
Jim says, "When
I began playing classical guitar some 37 years ago, I remember
very few sources of information and music. Times have changed in the
years since, and I have been happy to be on Dayton Public Radio's team
to help amaze, inspire and inform all those who think, as do I, that
the guitar is an instrument of great beauty and soul."
