Falling ice, branches, power outages (remember Hurricane Ike?), birds, pests -- in the past, all of these have caused Classical 88.1 to go off the air. To prevent such situations from arising again, WDPR applied for, and was awarded, a generous grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that will help not only increase our HD signal strength (by a factor of 4 times), but allow us to install new backup transmitters at both WDPR and WDPG.

A note from our Chief Engineer, Jim Stitt:

The new transmitter at WDPG is the latest Harris Flexiva FAX-20 solid state model, one of the first in the country. It replaced the old system which was a combination of a Harris Z8 digital and a Harris HT-20 tube type transmitter in Greenville. The HT-20 now becomes the backup transmitter for WDPG. I have attached a photo of the new WDPG transmitter (which will appear in an article in Radio World Magazine).

We then moved the Harris Z8 digital transmitter from Greenville to Dayton, upgraded it, and so we now have 2 Harris ZHD solid state transmitters for WDPR.....one for a main and one as a backup.

In addition to the 4 fold increase in digital HD power, we will now have greater reliability due to this redundancy. We also acquired the latest companion Exporter and Importer equipment for the studio that will increase the HD reliability and continue to provide the capability to add future program and data services.
